A Unique Mother-Daughter Getaway

When one thinks of a mother-daughter getaway, volunteering at an oncology camp isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, but that is exactly what my daughter and I did in the summer of 2014. After hearing nothing but wonderful things about CRG, we were intrigued and signed up to be camp counselors. We were welcomed with open arms and impressed by the positive energy, camper camaraderie, and community involvement.

The mornings started with a camp huddle and fun songs, and the days ended around the campfire filled with music, jokes, skits, talent, and emotion.  The campers were thrilled to be back at camp where they immediately reconnected with former campers and counselors from prior years. The support, friendship, and enthusiasm displayed by the campers was heartwarming. We left with fond memories and meaningful connections.

Since that first mother-daughter experience, our family has supported the camp in a variety of ways, including volunteering and supporting Idaho Gives. We are excited to watch Hidden Paradise transform into a state-of-the-art medical camp catering to the needs of children in Idaho. This year will be a milestone, welcoming other medical groups to enjoy the beautiful site and create memories of their own.

I love the energy of camp, so this year I will volunteer in a behind-the-scenes role….assisting in the kitchen, helping wherever I am needed. Thankfully for the campers, I won’t be in charge of menu planning, that will be done by a professional. I am looking forward to seeing old friends, making new ones, and creating lasting memories this summer at CRG.
